The Classic Maya polities of Baking Pot and Lower Dover developed along two dramatically different trajectories. At Baking Pot, the capital and associated apical elite regime grew concomitantly with surrounding populations over a thousand-year period. The smaller polity of Lower Dover, in contrast, formed when a Late Classic political center was established by an emergent apical elite regime amidst several long-established intermediate elite-headed districts. The different trajectories through which these polities formed should have clear implications for residential size variability. We employ the Gini coefficient to measure variability in household volume to compare patterns of residential size differentiation between the two polities. The Gini coefficients, while similar, suggest greater differentiation in residential size at Baking Pot than at Lower Dover, likely related to the centralized control of labor by the ruling elite at Baking Pot. While the Gini coefficient is synonymous with measuring wealth inequalities, we suggest that in the Classic period Belize River Valley, residential size was more reflective of labor control.

Summary
Almost 40 years ago David Barker made his observation that poor in utero growth increased cardiovascular disease risk in the offspring. A few years prior to this, the first baby to be conceived through IVF was born. Since then, an estimated 8 million babies worldwide have been born via one form or another of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). However, data from experimental animal and human clinical studies have highlighted the period around conception as being particularly sensitive to sub-optimal environmental conditions. Furthermore, there is growing concern that aspects of the ART procedures themselves may alter fetal and neonatal growth and increase the incidence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, cancer, asthma and neurodevelopmental issues in the children. However, a large degree of confounding factors including parental infertility, disparity in ART culture media and methods, and even the design of the follow-up studies, mean that further investigations are required in the definition of causal relationships between ART and child health.

Summary
One of the first of Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games columns I ever read was “Euler's Spoilers,” in November 1959 [1], and after all these years I think it is still my favorite (maybe this is just because I love the way he rhymed ‘Euler’ and ‘spoiler’). It dealt with what we now call Latin squares, n × n arrays using n symbols such that each symbol appears exactly once in each row and column.
Latin squares are extremely useful in the design of statistical experiments, but they are perhaps better known now for their appearance in recreational puzzles such as sudoku where each row and each column of a 9 × 9 array contains each of the integers 1, 2, …, 9 exactly once. In 2004, a Japanese mathematics teacher, Tetsuya Miyamoto, invented a sudoku-like puzzle called KenKen (loosely translated, this means “wisdom squared”). KenKen quickly became so popular that it is now a standard feature in newspapers around the world, and there are two very good web sites ([2], [3]) that offer new puzzles daily online.
As in sudoku, the goal in KenKen is to fill an n × n grid with the numbers 1 through n so as not to repeat a number in any row or column. Despite the fact that it uses numbers, sudoku is not an arithmetical puzzle; any nine symbols could be used in place of the integers 1-9. Solving a KenKen puzzle, on the other hand, depends heavily upon several important ideas about numbers.

Research on communication between glia and neurons has increased in the past decade. The onset of neuropathic pain, a major clinical problem that is not resolved by available therapeutics, involves activation of spinal cord glia through the release of proinflammatory cytokines in acute animal models of neuropathic pain. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that the spinal action of the proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin 1 (IL-1) is involved in maintaining persistent (2 months) allodynia induced by chronic-constriction injury (CCI). The anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 can suppress proinflammatory cytokines and spinal cord glial amplification of pain. Given that IL-1 is a key mediator of neuropathic pain, developing a clinically viable means of long-term delivery of IL-10 to the spinal cord is desirable. High doses of intrathecal IL-10-gene therapy using naked plasmid DNA (free pDNA-IL-10) is effective, but the dose required limits its potential clinical utility. Here we show that intrathecal gene therapy for neuropathic pain is improved sufficiently using two, distinct synthetic polymers, poly(lactic-co-glycolic) and polyethylenimine, that substantially lower doses of pDNA-IL-10 are effective. In conclusion, synthetic polymers used as i.t. gene-delivery systems are well-tolerated and improve the long-duration efficacy of pDNA-IL-10 gene therapy.

On January 8, 1998—my birthday, as it happens—I greeted 24 tired and slightly scared undergraduates from the United States as they got off their British Airways flight from London and stood in line awaiting immigration and customs clearance at the airport in Harare. I had taken a semester off from my job as professor of mathematics at Colorado College to direct the ACM (Associated Colleges of the Midwest) Program in Zimbabwe and had no more idea what our joint experience in Zimbabwe would bring than they did. I too was nervous with anticipation.
